4 golden rules of setting up your cat’s litter box

Here’s the scoop on poop: your cat won’t be truly happy unless they have a safe, comfy, consistently clean place to… you know.

It’s up to you to create and maintain this “sacred spot.” If you don’t, your furry friend might choose other places in your home—carpets, beds, even clothes—as their personal bathroom. To keep your cat happy, healthy, and your home accident-free, follow these four golden rules for setting up the perfect litter box.

  1. Work out how many litter boxes you need

The rule is simple: one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Some cats prefer separate boxes for peeing and pooping, and many won’t share with other cats. In multi-cat homes, a few extra boxes can help prevent territorial spats and keep everyone comfortable.

  1. Choose the best litter box

Pick a box that’s slightly longer than your cat from nose to tail so they can easily turn, scratch, and settle in. Pay attention to height—kittens and senior cats may need a low entry.

Covered boxes may look tidier, but not all cats like them; they can trap smells, limit movement, and make some cats feel trapped. Every cat is different, so be ready to experiment.

Our tray is simple, sturdy, extra-large, and easy to clean—great for most cats. If you prefer a high-tech option, we talk about automatic litter trays here.

  1. Pick the purr-fect location

Where you place the box matters just as much as the box itself. The ideal spot is:

  • Quiet and private (corners are great—cats like to see what’s around them)
  • On a non-carpeted surface for easier cleaning
  • Well-ventilated to help reduce odors
  • Far from food and water
  • Away from sleeping areas—including your bed
  • Clear of loud appliances, drafts, and vents
  • Not up or down stairs if you have a senior cat or young kitten
  • Accessible 24/7 (make sure no doors can close and trap them out)
  1. Add the right litter

The final step is choosing a litter your cat actually likes. Most cats prefer clumping varieties—and luckily, most humans do too. Katz-Loo Natural Clumping Cat Litter is a great option: it feels instinctively “right” for cats, is affordable, 100% natural, Australian-sourced, easy to use, and excellent at controlling odours.
